In this post you will learn what is the engine behind Tableau, where to find the software and the basic navigation in the tool.In few words - Tableau is a visual analytics platform with beautiful and powerful capabilities. It's one the the three major platforms competing for the business analytics service market. In my opinion Tableau visuals is one of the most beautiful, user-friendly and gives you the most esthetically pleasing charts, dashboards and stories you can create. Using Tableau you can be an artist and build a data world which will take the user to different dimensions. I'll stop with the flattering and focus on the important stuff.
With all that said lets dig in the product itself. In your project you can use Tableau Public or Tableau Desktop (there is a 14 days trail version). Tableau public is a great tool for you to practice for free. You can share your work and create a portfolio which will be available on the official Tableau public server. Of course this is not an option if you create a corporate dashboards so you need the desktop version, the creator license and the corporate Tableau server space. But overall the idea behind the functions I'll present in these posts is to show you different tips and tricks, the capabilities of the tool and how to use it's full potential. So if you have the desktop version - use it. If you don't have it - download the public or the trial desktop version and practice on it. It's up to you. My advice is to open Superstore Sample Workbook and see the beauty of Tableau: This is how a dashboard should like in my humble opinion. You can see there are different objects on the bottom - these are the dashboards in this projects. In each dashboard there are several sheets. You can open them by clicking on this square : When you open the sheet you will see the following view : I'll explain the attributes in several point:
With all that said you are in charge now.Go to the Tableau official site, download the version you prefer and start playing with the data, go tot the navigation and explore the different views. See you soon in the next post hen I'll continue with the functionalities of Tableau.
